Paley Center guests joined an audience which included distinguished luminaries and thought leaders Maria Shriver, Larry King, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Adam Clayton Powell III, and Soledad O’Brien amongst others for an advance screening of the new documentary from CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour. In Amanpour Reports: Generation Islam, the acclaimed journalist takes viewers across Afghanistan, Pakistan and Gaza giving them a look inside the battle for the hearts and minds of youth in the Muslim world.
The documentary, which will be broadcast over CNN on August 13 just one week before Afghanistan's national elections on August 20, comes as U.S. President Barack Obama seeks to forge new relationships with Muslim nations and intensify the U.S. war efforts in Afghanistan.
"In my travels through Gaza and Afghanistan, again and again I found people more interested in a future than a fight. Parents who want the best for their children and children who know there has to be something better," says Amanpour. "And their allegiance will be to whoever helps them get there."
Following the screening, Amanpour and CNN Productions vice president and senior executive producer Mark Nelson took to the stage for a thought-provoking Q&A session lasting well into the evening.
Amanpour, a 2005 honoree of the Center’s She Made It initiative recognizing the outstanding achievements of women in media, will also launch a new, hour-long Sunday afternoon interview program focusing in international issues on CNN in September.
