by Rebecca Paller

Last weekend I took a train to Norfolk, Virginia, to see a magnificent production of the Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson musical "Lost in the Stars" (a powerful work from 1949 about apartheid in South Africa) conducted by the legendary Julius Rudel. I arrived in town late Friday night, just in time to catch the tail end of a report on the 11 o'clock news about a hostage situation at the MacArthur Center shopping mall. The standoff had ended a few hours earlier when a man and woman suspected in a double homicide surrendered to the authorities.
