The Art of Media-Savvy Satire:
Bob Elliott Converses with Chris Elliott and Keith Olbermann

Monday, March 31, 2008; 6:00 to 7:30 pm

The Paley Center is saluting the work of legendary satirists Bob & Ray, with Bob Elliott himself and his son Chris, acclaimed writer/performer of Late Night with David Letterman and the creator/star of Get a Life, discussing and screening clips from their careers. Along for the tribute is Keith Olbermann, who cites Bob & Ray as a major influence on Countdown, his nightly blending of news and satire. It will be quite a meeting of the media-savvy wits.

Sparring with Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal:
Dick Cavett Narrates His Legendary Show

Monday, April 7, 2008; 6:00 to 7:30 pm

The late Norman Mailer liked to engage in heavyweight conversation on TV. He found a worthy opponent in Gore Vidal when the pair came to verbal fisticuffs during the incendiary 1971 Dick Cavett Show. Few media moments are as intellectually electrifying as Mailer confronting Vidal about his recently published essay in the New York Review of Books, laced with witty asides by Cavett and New Yorker writer Janet Flanner. Cavett will provide a DVD-like, blow-by-blow commentary while the complete show screens and answer audience questions.

A Sign of the Times:
The Petula Clark Special with Harry Belafonte

Thursday, May 8, 2008
NEW DATE Monday, September 22

Forty years ago singer Petula Clark was given her own special by NBC only to have the innocent variety show end up the center of a racial controversy. But it's more than that: Petula is a time capsule of the styles and sounds of 1968. Clark sings such hits as "Don't Sleep in the Subway," and is joined by another great entertainer, Harry Belafonte. Following a screening of the program they will appear with the special's director/producer, Steve Binder, to talk about its creation and notoriety.
