When Joanna Rudnick was twenty-seven she tested positive for a hereditary genetic mutation that leaves women particularly vulnerable to breast and ovarian cancer. Her stirring and personal documentary, In the Family, illuminates her struggle with the diagnosis and the agonizing decision over whether to remove her breasts and reproductive organs as a preventative measure. The film also introduces viewers to other very different families all coping with the same devastating situation and explores the potential consequences of genetic testing. Following the screening will be a panel discussion with the filmmaker and experts in several fields.
Copresented with the Playboy Foundation, P.O.V., and Kartemquin Films.
