Please join us for an exclusive special PALEY100 event surrounding the landmark television documentary series Cold War, conceived by Ted Turner and executive produced by Pat Mitchell and Sir Jeremy Isaacs for CNN.
The Paley Center for Media will screen a compilation of Ted Turner’s twenty-four episode documentary series Cold War followed by a panel discussion with Ted Turner, executive producers Sir Jeremy Isaacs and Pat Mitchell, and the Honorable Mikhail S. Gorbachev and other special guests. A private dinner will follow with our esteemed panelists, Trustees, and PALEY100 Patrons at the Paley Center.
A George Foster Peabody Award–winner for excellence in 1998, the twenty-four episode Cold War is a landmark work, the first major documentary on the subject and still widely regarded as the definitive filmic statement on the five-decade-long political and military rivalry between the Western and communist worlds. Conceived by Ted Turner and executive produced by Pat Mitchell and Sir Jeremy Isaacs for CNN, the series took three years to make, and involved the filming of over 10,000 hours of original footage, plus the acquisition of archival footage from around the world, much of it never before seen by international audiences. Original interviews with numerous key cold war figures are included. Yale University’s John Lewis Gaddis, a consultant on the project whom the New York Times once dubbed the “Dean of Cold War Historians,” has praised the series for presenting the cold war “more effectively than has ever been done or ever will be done again on television.”
As a vital part of American history this documentary gives an in-depth look at the significance the Cold War era had on the United States. Warner Brothers will release the first ever DVD set of the twenty-four episode series in May along with this launch event to commemorate the impact of the historical documentary that aired over ten years ago.
