Naomi Boak, Filmmaker
Tonight offers a unique event for the PaleyDocFest: an evening with celebrated New Yorker writer Susan Orlean, who conceived her latest book about animal-superhero Rin Tin Tin in the spirit of a documentary. In one of the most anticipated books of the year, Orlean relates the sweeping tale of the German shepherd’s astonishing journey from orphaned puppy during World War I to a movie and television icon for several generations. David Carr will interview Orlean about the myth vs. the reality of the hero dog. It is a compelling story that will be made into a documentary, and Susan’s chosen director, Naomi Boak, will be here to talk about this Adaptation (a word all Orlean fans cherish). Orlean will also screen clips of Rin Tin Tin’s television career, recognizing the producer who made it possible, Herbert Leonard. Earlier in the week, she will screen one of Rinty’s movie triumphs at the New York Film Festival. No matter what the media, the affecting narrative of Rin Tin Tin underlines the enduring bond between man and animal.
After the discussion, Orlean will be available to sign her new book, recently published by Simon & Schuster.
