The rich are different from us: witness The Philanthropist’s Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), billionaire tycoon/playboy who undergoes a life-changing experience while rescuing a young boy during a hurricane in Nigeria, and is suddenly transformed into an Indiana Jones–like altruist dodging bullets, corrupt bureaucrats, drug barons, and, yes, poisonous snakes as he crisscrosses the globe performing good deeds. Filmed internationally, The Philanthropist is as much character journey as action/adventure, as Teddy is purging his own demons, which have been festering since the death of his young son.
The Philanthropist premieres on NBC on Wednesday, June 24, but the Paley Center has it first. Join us for this premiere screening of the pilot episode, scripted by Tom Fontana (Oz, Homicide: Life on the Street) and directed by Peter Horton (thirtysomething), both executive producers of the series.
