In Person

Greg Daniels and members of the writing staff

Soon to begin its fifth season on NBC, The Office has grown into a dependably hilarious and uncommonly affecting look at the difficulty of maintaining human connections and dignity in the contemporary corporate workplace, dissecting the minutiae of cubicle life with Whartonesque precision and ironic wit. Show-runner Greg Daniels and his writing staff will discuss the process of turning quotidian misery into heart-piercing humor and a raft of Emmy, Golden Globe, and Peabody Awards.

  • As you well know, The Office is a great show – my favorite!! But, after watching it for years now, one character – Michael – has become (remains) oh so tediously stupid!!!! No one that you / we know is this moronic and inept!! No one that you / we know has absolutely nothing or no one in their life – besides their place of employ. His role in the ‘Ethics’ episode was so typically juvenilistic!! Want to make a great show excellent?? Simply have your (stagnated) writers give Mikey a LIFE!!!! Do you realize that EVERY character on this show has a life / relationship / someone to bond with except for moronic Mikey. Please fix it because The Office has so sadly remained – “Same old dim-witted Mikey / different episode!” Thank You WEO

  • How do you feel about employers using the episodes in their own employee inservices? Usually adding "Watch Michael and do the opposite".

  • Explain how you deal with the challenges of marrying traditional self-contained episodic sitcom writing with the relatively new challenges from plot driven viewers. If that doesn't make sense, can you explain how you deal with the large group of fans who want more and more from the Jim & Pam storyline, etc. and how you try to learn from things like Ross & Rachel on Friends, or from the mistakes a lot of recent shows made burning through promising story arcs and ruining what made the show well-liked to begin with? (Grey's Anatomy, The O.C., Desperate Housewives) Also: How do I get a job as an assistant for the writing room? I will bribe whoever needs bribing, and will get Bobbleheads made of the entire writing staff if I'm given an interview. That is a guarantee.

  • Will we see the current financial crisis reflected in any future episodes? A certain "condo owner" seems to be unaffected by the downturn. BTW I couldn't help but think of The Office every time Biden mentioned "Scranton".

  • Can you explain the radical shift in the character of Jan and tell us where she's going? Will we ever see the old Jan again (please)?

  • Nice seeing the character Stanley fleshed out more. Will we be seeing more of Stanley's past Black activism in future episodes? Or maybe even a Stanley blog on the nbc site..."Stanley's Black Power Walking Strength Training tips." Sorry for the multiple questions. There should be more questions given the long line of people waiting to ask a question at comic-con.

  • Are we ever going to see Casual Friday?

  • Office spin-off: Any crossover characters between the two shows? Also will the writers of the spinoff show make an appearance or two or more on the show? It would be great to see Rachel make a guest appearance.

  • Previous question redacted. I don't know what I was thinking.

  • LOST has announced it's series ending, and given the cast members burgeoning film careers...When do you see this series ending? A 6th season or a lucky 7?
