University Series Frequently Asked Questions

Presented live, via satellite, to colleges and universities throughout the United States, the Robert M. Batscha University Seminar Series features writers, directors, producers, and actors from contemporary and historic television and radio, as well as the policymakers and analysts who influence the issues being discussed. This series enlivens and enriches existing curricula in disciplines as diverse as journalism, communications, political science, and education.

Now in its fourteenth year, the series explores issues and the creative process behind both fiction and nonfiction programming.

Each ninety-minute seminar includes highlight clips from the Paley Center's collection, providing a basis for the moderated panel discussion that follows. A question-and-answer session gives students at participating schools an opportunity to speak directly to the panelists via telephone.

What is the cost to receive the seminars?

  1. The seminars are offered free of charge to the universities and colleges. There is no charge for the program or the publications that accompany the seminars. You must register for each semester you wish to receive.
  2. How do we register?

You can register online if you have previously been given login information. For more information, refer to Registration Information.
  3. How are the seminars delivered?

The panelists are in person at the New York or Los Angeles Paley Center, and the seminars are either telecast live by satellite, or presented in their entirety on this website after the event (on a page that requires password login). You may watch a satellite-delivered program as a class in real-time or tape the program for future classroom use. Contact your campus media center to arrange for a downlink.
  4. How do we get the satellite information?

Information will be sent to registered colleges and universities via e-mail approximately two weeks before the program airs. Registered users may retrieve the satellite coordinates online using their login information. Each 90-minute program will be on both Ku-band and C-band transponders with a one-hour test period before the seminar.
  5. How do we participate in the Question & Answer session?

Please have a telephone available in or near the space in which the seminar will be viewed. Use the 800 number provided to place calls to the panelists. Paley Center curators will answer calls and arrange the questions by topic for inclusion in the program.
  6. Can I obtain a copy of a missed seminar?

At this time, copies of seminars are not available for purchase. All satellite seminars are available for viewing at the Paley Center in New York or Los Angeles. Some past seminars can be watched on this website on a password-protected page (email satsem@paleycenter.org for login information if you are an authorized user).
