MODERN FAMILY: GREAT EXPECTATIONS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Phil is frustrated when Claire gifts him with "hug coupons" for their anniversary, admitting that she is terrible at gift-giving. Mitchell and Cameron decide to call their wild friend Sal for a much-needed night out, and Jay happily prepares for his semi-regular sleepover with his grandkids, though elsewhere Haley reveals that she would much prefer to attend a party with her friends. Realizing that Phil is disappointed, Claire falsely assures him that his "real present" is coming later that night, and Haley is frustrated when Jay, declaring that she has already committed herself to family time, refuses to let her head off to her soirée.

Mitch and Cam are taken aback when the fun-loving Sal begins making sinister "jokes" about Lily, and Claire excitedly announces that she and Phil are to receive a private concert from Izzy LaFontaine, bassist for Spandau Ballet – of whom Phil is actually not at all fond. Jay, drawing on experience from Claire and Mitch's mischievous teen years, catches Haley trying to sneak out to her party, and Izzy is offended to realize that Phil is not really a "fandau," though Phil hastily tries to cover, not wanting to ruin Claire's good intentions. Mitch and Cam realize that Sal has "First-Child Syndrome" and is jealous of Lily, and they quickly assure her that she is still important to them despite their changing lives. Gloria urges Jay to let Haley enjoy her teen years and attend the party after all, though when Dylan arrives to escort her, he is quickly won over by the "Sloppy-Jays" and Western movie. An annoyed Izzy calls Phil out on not being "True" in his enthusiasm, but Phil tells an upset Claire that he appreciates her odd gift and the two share an anniversary dance. Elsewhere, everyone gathers at Jay's for the sleepover, though Mitch and Cam are still wary of Sal's attitude towards her "sibling." Includes commercials and promos.
