TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {DAVID BRENNER, ARETHA FRANKLIN, WALLY LATTIMER} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are centenarian Wally Lattimer, comedian David Brenner, and singer Aretha Franklin.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the upcoming holiday season; President Ronald Reagan's drastic action in "furloughing" 400,000 apparently non-essential Washington staffers to end the federal shutdown; and California's surprisingly outdated textbooks. Carson then ventures into the audience for a round of "Stump the Band," and announcer Ed McMahon and bandleader Doc Severinsen are, as usual, "stumped" by the guests' song suggestions.
The first guest, Lattimer, joins Carson and chats about his recent 100th birthday party, attended by nearly 300 friends and family members; his various gifts, including several bottles of brandy; his moderate drinking habits and former smoking habit; updates on his nine children, 19 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; a 99-year-old photograph of himself when he was a year old; his nutrition habits; his views on "youngsters" and their morality, as well as current television; his commitment to voting in every election, starting with Theodore Roosevelt for president; the hard work of growing up on a farm; his selective movie-going preferences; and the experience of outliving two wives and receiving many letters from would-be third brides who have seen him on television.
Next, Brenner performs a stand-up routine about California's "trendy" habits and frequent smog problems; how aggressive baseball fans compare to sedate tennis viewers and "the funniest fans," golf enthusiasts; the challenges of living with and training dogs; unhelpful advice from the government about avoiding the bubonic plague; France's new high-speed train and their famous nude beaches; and why he is attempting to eat more healthfully but has not abandoned smoking. Brenner then briefly chats with Carson about "dumb facts" he has recently learned about Thanksgiving and why "everything's a con."
Finally, Franklin performs "It's My Turn" from her new album "Love All the Hurt Away" (1981). Includes commercials and promos.
