FAERIE TALE THEATRE: HANSEL AND GRETEL {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of whimsical adaptations of fairy tales hosted by Shelley Duvall. As this version of the classic tale of "Hansel and Gretel" begins, two children overhear their stepmother persuading their father that it would be better to leave them in the forest than to keep them at home where, since there is little food, they are certain to starve to death. Hansel and Gretel are taken into the woods and left in a clearing. They find their way home by following a trail of stones that Hansel has dropped along the way. The next day, their father and stepmother again lead them into the forest and leave them in a clearing. This time Hansel uses bread crumbs to make a trail that will lead them back to their house. Unfortunately, birds eat the crumbs and the children cannot find their way home. Instead they follow a dove to a house made of gingerbread, which they start eating. A witch appears and invites them into the house. The next day, the witch locks up Hansel, attempts to fatten him up so she can eat him, and makes Gretel her slave. The children try to prevent the witch from eating Hansel, but when the witch decides to cook Gretel first, the girl must think of a way to save her brother and herself.
