One in this series of interview programs hosted by Larry King. In this edition King interviews former U.S. President Richard Nixon, whose recently published book, "Seize the Moment: America's Challenge in a One Superpower World," provides the general frame for the conversation. Nixon comments on President George Bush's recent collapse at a state dinner in Japan, and how it feels to be vice president when the president's health is precarious -- noting that President Dwight D. Eisenhower had a stroke and a heart attack while in office. Nixon defends Vice President Dan Quayle as holding up well under fire; says the current recession should not be blamed on Japan; and defends Bush as an extremely hard-working president with sound principles and strong conservative credentials. Among the other topics discussed are the role of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and television in the end of communism in the Soviet Union; the importance of U.S. support of Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the development of good relationships with the new republics of the former Soviet Union, as well as the necessity of transitional humanitarian aid from Germany and Japan; conservative firebrand Pat Buchanan's views on Israel and U.S. isolationism; the possibilities for great progress or great disaster in the Middle East in the 1990's; and the current move towards disarmament. Nixon suggests that the current recession has been prolonged by a lack of public confidence in the future, and comments on filmmaker Oliver Stone; the Warren Commission; Fidel Castro and the possibility of progress with Cuba; the Super Bowl; Pete Rose; and whether it's hard for him to spend time in Washington now.
