LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN VIDEO SPECIAL (TV)
Summary
The first prime-time special presentation of this series of late-night talk shows hosted by David Letterman. This program features video remote segments culled from the first year of the series. During Letterman's opening monologue, actor Paul Newman turns up on stage and tells the host he was feeling blue and came on for the applause; as it turns out, the applause-hungry actor pops up several times throughout the telecast. Next, Letterman introduces the following video segments: the acerbic host is seen working the drive-thru window of a McDonald's in suburban New Jersey; he and bandleader Paul Shaffer play golf to the strains of Katrina and the Waves' "Walkin' on Sunshine," attended to by a sumo wrestler caddy; and actor Warren Beatty appears in a mock commercial for "Big Ass Ham." For The Prime Time Special Top Ten List, "Words that Sound Romantic When Spoken by Barry White," the dulcet-toned singer appears on stage, replete with back-up singers, to deliver the list. Additional video segments include the following: Letterman is seen trekking through the snow in a New Jersey town, taking a door-to-door "Olympic Survey" about the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway; Letterman complains to Shaffer about a noise that's been bothering him, exits the building, and eventually enters the nearby Winter Garden Theater, where he walks onto the set of "Cats" and tells a performer singing "Memory" to "knock it off"; and Letterman and Hungarian celebrity Zsa Zsa Gabor are seen driving the streets of Los Angeles in a convertible, gorging themselves on every kind of fast food imaginable. After the L.A. segment, Gabor appears in the theater to take a bow, and is predictably joined by Newman. Later, after complaining to director Hal Gurnee about a camera shot, Letterman is shown attempting to find the control booth. During his ensuing journey through the corridors and storage rooms of the Ed Sullivan Theater, he encounters a Connecticut state policeman, Sirajul and Mujibur from the souvenir shop next door, and ubiquitous actor and gadfly Calvert DeForest; eventually, he ends up on the set of the set of the "CBS Evening News," behind anchorman Dan Rather. In the final video segment, Letterman is seen consulting with hairstylists Judy Erickson, Mickey Ballantine, Andres Alegria, Jerry Roman, Frederic Fekkai, and Karla Betcher about what to do with his hair, which he calls the worst in show business. Commercials deleted. (This tape has full commercial break blackouts, generally about two minutes long. The "Late Show" band plays on throughout blackout.)
