ABC'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS {WORLD LUMBERJACK
CHAMPIONSHIPS; GYMNASTICS; BOXING} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of sports programs. The segments on this program include the World Lumberjack Championships from Hayward, Wisconsin; an inside look at the growth of gymnastics; and a profile of boxer "Sugar" Ray Leonard. Highlights of the first segment include the following: Jim Lampley and Bob Beattie cover the one-man buck, two-man buck, power sawing, standing block chop, upperhand block chop, and the springboard chop events, which make up the lumberjack competion; Ron Hartill, the five-time champion, takes on Merv Jensen in the one-man bucking event; the lumberjack profession past and present is examined; Ron Johnson takes on his father, Sven, in the power saw competition; how the competitors take care of their equipment is demonstrated and explained; and the women's log rolling finals has Missy Sayklly taking on sixteen-year-old Jeni Janke. In the next segment, Jim McKay and Gordon Maddux look at the tremendous growth of gymnastics, and gymnasts such as Olga Korbut and Cathy Rigby are shown in their most stunning performances. Next, "Sugar" Ray Leonard talks about winning the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics, using Muhammad Ali-style tactics during his fights, his strong family bond, his hobbies outside of the ring, and his future in boxing and in life. Following this segment, is a tribute to Walter O'Malley, a baseball pioneer, who died earlier in the week. Back at the lumberjack competition, the speed climbing event has Clarence Bartow taking on Mike Rogerson; Hartill goes up against Jim Taylor in the springboard event, with Hartill winning the entire competition for the sixth straight year; and in the men's log rolling finals, Fred Scheer, the hometown favorite, takes on Phil Scott in the best two out of three. Next is a look at some of the most stunning performances in gymnastics history, including fourteen-year-old Nadia Comaneci, receiving seven perfect scores in the 1972 Olympics; in the 1976 games, Shun Fujimoto breaking his leg during the competition but going on to compete in the rings exercise; Peter Kormann becoming the first United States men's gymnast to receive a medal since 1932; Kurt Thomas becoming the first United States gymnast to win the gold medal in 1978, and Marcia Frederick also winning gold for the women the same year; and Kurt Thomas discusses his goals and how he trains for the Olympics.
