WEDNESDAY PLAY, THE: UP THE JUNCTION (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. Filmed in documentary style to the 1960s music of the Beatles, the Kinks, Sonny and Cher, and others, this drama follows the story of Sylvie (White), her sister Rube (Sherman), and their friend Eilleen (Turner), who remain irrepressibly lively despite their dead-end jobs and decaying neighborhood. Narration by local residents punctuates the action as the girls meet their future boyfriends (Barron, Standing, and Selby) at a club one evening, work by day at a candy factory, do their laundry, and discuss men and relationships. Scenes of the neighborhood are interwoven with a subplot featuring Barney (Sewell), a door-to-door salesman, discussing his job and the women he meets. When Rube becomes pregnant, Sylvie and Eilleen help her through the painful complications following an abortion. Later, in a pub, Sylvie becomes embroiled in a fight with her estranged husband (Clark).

The girls and their boyfriends sit in a local pub discussing various topics from growing old to the H-bomb. Tragedy follows when Rube's boyfriend, Terry (Standing), dies in a motorcycle accident after leaving the pub. A few days later, Eilleen discovers that her married boyfriend (Selby) is in prison and visits him there. Meanwhile, neighbors mourn the death of scrubwoman Mrs. Hardy (Webb). In the end, the girls walk smiling through the neighborhood.
