Summary

The fourth installment of this "journey through intellectual history." This program focuses on chemistry. Jacob Bronowski discusses the pseudo-science of alchemy, and the development of copper and bronze. Early Chinese civilization is examined, and the importance of steel and the ritual significance of sword-making in Japanese culture are discussed. The lure of gold and alchemical efforts to duplicate it are explored. Paracelsus' contribution to modern medicine and Joseph Priestley's and Antoine Lavoisier's contribution to the understanding of oxygen are explained. The program closes with a look at John Dalton's development of the atomic theory.
