The Apollo Theatre, recently declared a non-profit organization, has featured many famous African-American acts, giving many of them their starts. Several famous performers, such as Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick, and Lou Rawls recount their experience both attending shows at and performing onstage at the Apollo Theatre. They discuss the importance and prestige of the Apollo and its famous “Amateur Night.” Nipsey Russell and Linda Hopkins are interviewed about their debuts at the Apollo Theatre and what they feel are the defining performers and performances hosted by the Apollo Theatre. They also discuss the impact and influence of the audiences who attended the Apollo. They also talk about how the Apollo Theatre and its position in its community, particularly with relation to rising crime in the inner-city and the decline of smaller theaters in the wake of economic considerations and increasingly larger arenas for performance. They discuss their feelings on the possible future of the Apollo Theatre and its potential to be repurposed. Includes commercials.
