PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEY AFTER DARK: RICKY GERVAIS: OUT OF ENGLAND: THE STAND-UP SPECIAL {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Paley After Dark series. This evening features the world premiere of the HBO special, "Ricky Gervais: Out of England - The Stand-Up Special." Held at the Paley Center in New York, television curator Ron Simon talks about Gervais's accomplishments before introducing the special, which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:93569.) Following the screening, moderator Josh Tyrangiel, editor of Time.com, takes the stage with Gervais. Gervais then touches on such topics as: his "working-class" childhood in England; an early job as an events manager, which inspired him to write "The Office" with Stephen Merchant; his failed career as a pop singer in a group that tried to combine ABBA and Joy Division; his method of writing scripts with Merchant; if the penning of comedy material involves getting "stuff off his chest"; the one element that brought pathos to "The Office"; how he chose "Ghost Town" for his first starring role in a film; if he gets nervous when filming; which subjects make comic fodder in America, but don't translate in Europe; why he chose to co-direct his upcoming big-screen venture, "The Invention of Lying"; the social benefits of a white lie; and if he would ever consider hosting the Oscar ceremony.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: why he approved of an American version of "The Office"; his comic heroes; the process of perfecting a stand-up routine; how guest stars were chosen for "Extras"; why he stopped trying out new jokes in comedy clubs; if some viewers thought that "The Office" was a real documentary; his hope to get Madonna on "Extras," and the comic persona that he envisioned for her; if a new season of "Extras" is being considered; his reactions to the recent U.S. presidential election; his favorite American sitcoms; why he prides himself on having "only one brilliant character" in his repertoire; and his "guilty-secret" celebrity perks. Cataloging of this program has been made possible by Verizon Communications.
