This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 11:00 p.m. EDT with a chronological video that shows all of the events of the day as they unfolded on ABC News. The tape incorporates footage from different amateur videographers. After the video, anchor Peter Jennings speaks with former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger. Eagleburger adamantly states his belief that, if terrorist Osama bin Laden is confirmed to be behind the attacks, the U.S. will need to wage war on Afghanistan for harboring him. Jennings tells Eagleburger that he personally fears that it may not be right to jump into war without knowing exactly who is responsible. Jennings then shows a timeline of major terrorist attacks on the United States over the years. Pierre Thomas breaks in to report that the federal government has released a small amount of information linking one of the doomed plane's passengers to bin Laden. Reporter John Miller interrupts Thomas to offer an update on the previously reported van full of explosives. Jennings then talks to Ann Compton, who has spent the day traveling with President Bush as he flew from Florida to Louisiana to Nebraska to the District of Columbia. John McWethy provides an update on the rescue operation at the Pentagon, and Bill Blakemore files a report from the World Trade Center site about the methods the city plans to use to ship debris out of Manhattan. The tape ends as Jennings speaks by telephone to a woman named Alice Hoglan whose son Mark Bingham called her shortly before being killed when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.
