PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: FALL TV PREVIEW PARTIES 2012: ABC: 666 PARK AVE. {NY} {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Fall Preview series. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this evening celebrates ABC's fall line-up, focusing on the show "666 Park Avenue," the supernatural drama series about the owners and residents of a mysterious, elite New York City apartment building. Moderator Ron Simon (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks about upcoming events and then introduces the pilot episode, which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 108306.)

After the screening, Simon introduces the panelists: cast members Mercedes Masohn (Louise); Dave Annable (Henry Martin); Rachael Taylor (Jane Van Veen); and Vanessa Williams (Olivia Doran).

The conversation touches on such topics as: Williams' "holding deal" with ABC and her past shows "Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives"; how they all got involved with the show; show developer and executive producer David Wilcox's interest in alluding to "old-school" horror films such as "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Shining"; the cast's uncertainty about the truths behind the show's mysteries and the true source of the building's power; the experience of shooting all over New York City and casting various stage actors; and whether the show will receive a "back nine" beyond the thirteen episodes already ordered.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: filming at the Ansonia Building on the Upper West Side and the in-studio interior recreations; whether the show will air in other countries outside of the U.S.; the nature of horror stories on serialized television and the need to deal with the long-term consequences of bizarre events; the challenge of working with writers based in Los Angeles; a creepy real-life story reflected in the show's pilot, though written before the actual event; the show's "procedural element" relating to the building's other residents; Annable's short-lived series "Reunion"; the difficulties of acting with "nothing" before special effects are added; lawyer Henry's careless non-reading of the sinister building contract; the actors' occasional use of wry humor, depending on the individual episode's director; the possible gradual change of the show's focus over time; and the character of Nona Clark, played by Samantha Logan, and comparisons to Scatman Crothers' caretaker character in "The Shining."
