Part one of this two-part program spotlighting the Velvet Underground's 1993 reunion tour of Europe, interspersing footage of the band's Paris concert and interviews with the members of the group. Host Deborah Harry introduces the program by discussing the band's influence on music history. Highlights include the follwing: fan reaction to the group in several major European cities, including Prague and Berlin; Sterling Morrison explains the band's attempt to demystify rock n' roll; Lou Reed explains why they had Andy Warhol produce their first album; John Cale refuses to accept the label of "decadent" for the group; Reed reminisces about singer Nico and expresses his belief that the Underground was the first feminist band; Cale describes his first impressions of Reed; Morrison reveals Jimi Hendrix's feelings about the band; Cale discusses his belief that a band's music should make statements rather than ask questions; Mo Tucker remembers the contentious yet productive Reed/Cale writing tandem; and Morrison recalls the band's dissolution in 1970. Also, Czech president Vaclav Havel discusses the important role he believes the Velvet Underground played in the lives of those people resisting government oppression in Eastern Europe. Also includes footage of Warhol, the artist's late 1960's mutimedia stage show "The Floating Plastic Inevitable," and comments about the Underground by U2's Bono. Music includes Reed's solo renditions of "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "Heroin" and segments of classic Underground performances of "Venus in Furs" and "I'll Be Your Mirror."
