MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE: A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWEN (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about three lifelong buddies in L.A. whose friendship is tested by their midlife crises. In this episode, Joe prepares for a visit from his father, somewhat unnerved by the fact that he is dating someone new. He also attempts to covertly collect his winnings from a recent bet without alerting anyone to his gambling. Stella drops Terry at work and Owen gives the disgruntled staff a pep talk, encouraging them to work hard and pull them out of their slump. The salesmen seem more content to practice softball, however, and while Owen initially objects, his father suggests that he should take over management of the company team and encourage them to play together to boost morale, and he agrees. Terry and Stella go out for the night with her roommate and some friends, and their age difference is particularly noticeable when he finds that he cannot quite keep up with their festivities. Michelle surprises Joe at his home, complaining about troubles at work, and is startled to find his children there. She ends up spending the night on his couch and is still there when Joe’s father Artie arrives along with his new squeeze, Connie, and they all share a fairly awkward breakfast.
At softball practice, Owen frets that they need at least two women for the team. Terry arrives, fatigued from his wild night out, and Owen is amused until practice commences and the team turns out to be rather uncoordinated. He learns that some employees, including Jesse, have defected to another team and he attempts to cajole them to rejoin the company squad, but has no luck. Terry goes to visit Erin and awkwardly asks if their relationship still has a chance, but she can only apologize before sending him away. Michelle witnesses Joe receiving a payout from his bet and deduces that he is a gambler, but finds the fact that he is “dangerous” very appealing. At Norm’s, Joe discusses his discomfort with his father dating and Owen continues worrying about his team, which still needs another female and which lacks the proper team spirit. At the party store, Owen attempts to recruit Joe’s employee, Maria, to his team, wondering if her sexual orientation will make her a better player, much to Joe’s bewilderment. She happily agrees to play, however, having varsity experience. Owen drives by his rivals’ dealership and sees his former best salesman, Marcus, hard at work. Desperate, he begs Jesse and the others to join their team, finally offering to pay them time and a half, and Jesse relents.
Terry visits Stella and is surprised to learn that her parents are there. While in her home, he takes a look at her youthful life and realizes that their relationship is not sustainable. At the baseball game, tensions run high between the two teams, and everyone’s families arrive, including Michelle. Owen’s team does badly until Maria scores a home run, and the team celebrates until she accidentally lets slip that he is paying some members to play, which leads to an argument. Owen falls painfully and is humiliated as he runs to first, but the team gains new heart when Jesse scores. Artie attempts to talk to Joe about their dating lives, but Joe is distracted by a separate game on which he has another bet. Erin shows up and admits that she misses Terry, much to his delight, but Stella witnesses the moment and furiously drives onto the diamond, literally “stealing” second base in revenge. Terry apologizes to Stella, admitting that he is in love with Erin, and attempts to smooth over the awkward moment. The game draws to a close as Joe panics over his bet, and Owen manages to pull off an outstanding run at the last second, bringing his team to victory with a score of 9-8, much to the anger of Marcus and his team. Joe wins his bet and celebrates along with everyone else, and morale seems to be restored to Owen’s salesmen. Commercials deleted.
