GAME OF THRONES: TWO SWORDS {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The fourth season premiere in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.

In this episode, Tywin has Ice, the Stark blade once held by – and used to execute – Ned Stark, melted down and re-forged into two new swords, one of which he gives to Jaime with instructions to travel back to Casterly Rock to rule in his stead. Jaime, however, refuses and demands to remain in the Kingsguard. Tyrion anxiously awaits the arrival of the Martells of Dorne for the royal wedding and learns that ailing Prince Doran has sent his fierce younger brother Oberyn in his place. Tyrion finds Oberyn and his equally voracious paramour Ellaria Sand at a brothel, where he has already gotten into a conflict with a few boisterous Lannister soldiers. When Tyrion asks, Oberyn bluntly informs him that he has come to King's Landing seeking vengeance for his sister Elia and her children, murdered by Gregor Clegane on Tywin's orders during Robert's Rebellion.

Daenerys' dragons "bicker" amongst themselves as she finds Grey Worm and Daario Naharis competing for their queen's attention. Elsewhere, Tyrion awkwardly tries to comfort Sansa, urging her to "carry on" in the wake of her mother and brother's murders at the Red Wedding; Shae grows resentful of her lover's divided attention. Jaime receives a new golden hand from Qyburn and grows frustrated as Cersei, still angry that he "took too long" to return to her, continues to spurn his advances. In the North, Tormund questions Ygritte about Jon, suspicious that she did not truly intend to kill him; they are soon approached by a band of Thenn, who cruelly invite them to "eat Crow." Back at Castle Black, Jon mourns his half-brother Robb as he recovers from Ygritte's arrows. When he is called to answer for his murder of Qhorin Halfhand and his broken Night's Watch vows, he urgently warns them of Mance Rayder's impending attack. Thorne remains suspicious of his loyalty, though Maester Aemon opts to believe his claims.

Olenna is dazzled to meet Brienne of Tarth, who informs Margaery that she saw Stannis' form in the ghostly figure that killed Renly. Joffrey is disinterested in his "uncle" Jaime's security plans for the wedding, instead boasting about his victory over Stannis in the Battle of the Blackwater and mocking Jaime for his lack of famed victories. Daario continues boldly flirting with Dany as they head towards Mereen; she is furious to see that a great number of child slaves have been crucified along the road to the city. Brienne scolds Jaime for not entirely keeping his vow to Catelyn to protect her daughters, pointing out that Sansa is certainly not safe in King's Landing; knight-turned-fool Dontos Hollard finds Sansa and thanks her for saving his life, begging her to wear a certain necklace, supposedly his mother's, as a token of his gratitude. As they travel through the Riverlands, the Hound informs Arya that he intends to "sell" her to her last remaining relative, her aunt Lysa of the Vale. They soon come upon an inn at which Arya spots Polliver, the Lannister soldier who killed her friend Lommy and stole her sword, Needle. Polliver invites Sandor to join them, bragging that they can indulge in whatever mayhem they choose now that the war is "over" and Joffrey is king. Sandor, however, disdainful of Joffrey and angered by Polliver's lewd comments about Arya, starts a bloody brawl with the soldiers. Arya finally gets revenge for Lommy's death and reclaims her beloved sword.
