CHICO AND THE MAN: ED STEPS OUT (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a cantankerous garage owner and his wisecracking Chicano assistant. In this episode, Shirley Schrift arrives at the garage in search of assistance, explaining that she has recently moved into their neighborhood and opened a bakery. She quickly takes a liking to Ed and is pleased to learn that he is a widower, and an amused Chico clues Ed in to her interest. Ed declares that he is not interested in a relationship, though Chico suggests that he merely take her out for a non-committal "road test." Later, Shirley arrives with a cake for Ed and confides to Chico that she is hoping for a date to an upcoming bakery charity ball. Chico advises her that Ed is "old-fashioned" and prefers to be the inviter rather than the invitee, and together they drop pointed hints to Ed until he finally catches on and asks her out, much to her delight.
On the night of the dance, Ed begins to get cold feet and tells Chico a number of superficial reasons for his lack of interest in Shirley. He quickly changes his mind when she arrives at the garage in a glamorous dress, though he admits that he is still unsure, as he has not been on a date in many years. Chico tries to relax the would-be lovebirds with a bottle of wine, but Shirley tells the story of her husband's unusual death and Ed brings up Margaret, sparking an argument between them about their respective partners. Chico, however, declares that they are both simply nervous about attempting a new romance after losing their spouses, and they decide to head for the dance after all. Later, their relationship blossoms as Ed gives Shirley a crash course in car mechanics. Commercials deleted.
