FRIENDS: THE ONE WHERE ROSS GOT HIGH (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about six Generation-X friends who live together in New York City and share a favorite haunt, a coffee bar called Central Perk. In this episode, Monica tells Chandler that her parents will be joining them for Thanksgiving dinner. However, she admits that she has not told them that they are dating, as they dislike him for reasons unknown. Chandler confirms this with Ross and vows to win the Gellers over. Janine comes home and invites Joey and Ross to Thanksgiving dinner with her “hot dancer friends,” and they are extremely interested, but plan to stop by Monica’s briefly out of obligation. As dinner draws closer, Rachel happily prepares a traditional English trifle. Phoebe worries that Monica is not preparing a back-up dessert, but Monica says that she trusts her friend to do it well. Ross and Joey arrive and then attempt to leave right away, but the girls see through their plans and tell them they have to stay, as leaving to be with attractive dancers is “not very Thanksgiving-y.” Judy and Jack Geller arrive, and Chandler awkwardly attempts to charm them. Phoebe confides to Rachel that she had a romantic dream about Jack and now sees him as a “dream hunk.”
Monica attempts to talk Chandler up to her parents, but it doesn’t go well. Rachel explains the multiple layers of her trifle to Chandler and Joey: ladyfingers, custard, jam, bananas, and beef sautéed with peas and onions. They are confused until they realize she accidentally combined recipes for a trifle and a shepherd’s pie. They decide not to tell her, however, in order to not delay their escape to the dancers. Chandler fails again at complimenting Judy, who speculates that he is “stoned again.” Ross realizes what is happening and confides to Chandler that in high school, he smoked marijuana and then blamed it on Chandler when his parents caught him, which is why they dislike him. Monica demands that Ross tell them the truth, but he is reluctant. Joey then realizes that Rachel will take it personally if everyone hates her dessert, so he and Ross decide to make everyone pretend to enjoy it. Ross distracts Rachel—badly—while Joey gives the group “acting lessons.” Everyone then forces down the disgusting concoction, and they all find ways to subtly dispose of it, except Joey, who enjoys it. Phoebe then tells Rachel she had another dream in which Jack betrayed her, but she was saved by a chivalrous Jacques Cousteau. Finally, fed up, Monica blurts out the truth about Ross’ pot-smoking to his parents, and he in turn reveals secrets about her. The truth-telling escalates, and Joey, Rachel and Phoebe join in with their own shocking revelations as well, including Rachel’s horrified realization of her dessert error. Overwhelmed, Judy attempts to pacify everyone’s problems and thanks Chandler for sticking by her ne’er-do-well children through their various misdeeds, which delights him. As they clean up dinner, everyone admits that they threw out their servings of trifle, but Joey informs them that he ate all of their portions. Commercials deleted.
