BETTE: HALLOWEEN (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a "divine" celebrity named Bette, based on Bette Midler's real-life career.

Bette and Roy carve pumpkins in preparation for Halloween. A boy from Rose’s science class asks her out on a date and Bette and Roy try to interfere. Bette has Connie and Oscar bring down a trunk of her old Halloween costumes, as she hopes to give one to Rose. She plans to go trick-or-treating with Rose after she gets back from taping a television special with Dolly Parton. Rose says that she is now too old for trick-or-treating. Bette tells Roy that she is not as connected with Rose as she once was. Roy convinces Rose to go trick-or-treating with Bette. Bette films her number with Dolly, but during the taping Bette accidentally causes a piece of scenery to topple onto a control panel, damaging the production equipment. This causes a delay and forces Bette to initially take Rose trick-or-treating around the studio rather than their neighborhood. Bette decides to steal one of Dolly’s costumes to dress up as Dolly for Halloween.

Later, Bette and Rose go to various houses for trick-or-treating, although Rose does so without any enthusiasm. Eventually Rose complains that Bette went through with it purely to satisfy her own love of Halloween. Bette readily admits to Rose's analysis, and then gives Rose “permission” to grow up. Rose opts to go to one more house together, though Bette accidentally breaks a window there and alerts the police while trying to fend off a group of teenage vandals. After Rose and Bette return to the studio, the police arrive and arrest Dolly, believing that she was responsible for the broken window. Bette and Rose snicker about Dolly's arrest, and return home to divide up their candy. Rose admits that she had fun, leaving Bette overjoyed. They go trick-or-treating again the following year, with Bette dressed up as Barbra Streisand. Commercials deleted.
