ALIAS: THE INDEX (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic action series about CIA double agent Sydney Bristow and her adventures with her colleagues and her enemies. In this episode, Sydney learns from Weiss that Nadia is reluctant to celebrate her orphanage-assigned "birthday," though they both try to persuade her to enjoy it. Sloane then informs the group that the Blackwell Index, an encrypted list containing incriminating information against various officials, has been stolen. He instructs Sydney to get herself arrested in Paris in order to steal the decoder disc from the French police, and Vaughn prepares to head to Arizona to visit his comatose uncle. Dixon meets privately with Sydney and reveals that he has secretly tapped Sloane's home phone, refusing to trust him as he once did, and tells her that Sloane is possibly working with his old Alliance friend Miles Devereaux to steal the decoder disc and use the Index's information for themselves. Director Chase, however, feels that he does not yet have enough solid evidence that Sloane is committing a crime, and though Sydney urges Dixon to let the matter go, he asks for her help in finding proof. Vaughn visit his uncle and talks with a kindly nurse, Rosemary, who briefly mistakes him for his father, Bill.
Sloane, suspicious of Weiss' interest in Nadia, orders him to "impress him" with a better extraction plan for the mission. Sydney and Dixon decide to give Sloane a corrupted copy of the decoder disc, which will fail if he hands it over to Alliance, and they soon head off to Paris, where Sydney is arrested for causing a disturbance and vandalizing Weiss' car. Dixon poses as her lawyer, and the two quickly steal the disc from evidence and Sydney copies it, unseen by Nadia. She makes a daring rooftop escape and heads back to Langley, where Dixon informs her that Sloane has been making secure calls to Brussels from his home phone and that they must break into his house to decode them. Sloane seems suspicious of Sydney's "difficulty" in finding the disc in Paris, but she sticks to her story and then suggests that he should throw a birthday dinner for Nadia at his house. Vaughn remains by his uncle's bedside and Rosemary gives him a key, stating that his uncle wanted him to have it. Vaughn traces it to a storage locker and finds inside his father's diary with entries dated through 1982 – even though Bill Vaughn died in 1979.
Nadia thanks Sydney for her willingness to visit Sloane's home for her sake, unaware of her true intentions. During a rather awkward dinner, Sloane declares that he is a "changed man" for having met Nadia, and Sydney breaks into his office and decodes the phone calls, but is then caught in the act by Nadia. Nadia is furious at being manipulated into spying on her father, but Dixon then reveals that the phone calls do indeed contain his conversations with Devereaux about the disc, and Chase agrees that the evidence is sufficient. Sloane heads off to Brussels and the others tail him there, but they soon find him overseeing Jack's undercover meeting with the Alliance members, meaning that it was a trap all along and that he has not betrayed them. The corrupted disc fails and the Alliance members threaten to kill Jack, but Nadia bursts in and rescues him. In Arizona, Vaughn pleads with his unconscious uncle to wake up and explain the truth, and he is then further frustrated to learn that Rosemary is not really a nurse at all. Chase tells Dixon to continue keeping her appraised of Sloane's actions, and when Sloane uses the real decoder to access the Index, he calls Jack and tells him that it has everything they need "and more." Includes commercials and promos.
