CANE: A NEW LEGACY (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about a Cuban-American family running a rum and sugar cane business in Florida. In this episode, Pancho meets with a doctor and learns that his cancer treatment is not going well, but firmly declines when the doctor suggests chemotherapy, stating that he does not want to become weakened by the procedure. Despite Amalia’s protests, he turns his attention to the International Rum Awards, and tells his sons that he is looking for his replacement among the competitors, which surprises them. After winning the competition for the third year in a row, he decides upon Terry Greenway, a master blender from Australia, as his successor. He has a difficult time in securing her participation, though, because she is a “free agent” who does not wish to sign a contract. Pancho’s sons explain to him that only he can convince her, and he meets with her and they have an impassioned conversation about how they both “dream of rum.” He compliments her nerve and experimental blends, and she is won over.
Elsewhere, Henry is frustrated by his bar’s low profits and by the fact that Dmitry is selling drugs out of the club. Eventually, when he sees a patron overdosing on ecstasy, he attempts to confront Dmitry’s men, and he is beaten badly enough to land him in the hospital. A furious Alex attempts to bring down Dmitry through legal means, but he soon learns that the FBI is focusing on a bigger case involving Dmitry and won’t help. He then confronts Dmitry himself and offers to buy him out in order to terminate his association with Henry’s club, but he is rebuffed. Finally, in desperation, Alex makes a deal with Ramon, a criminal he knows, to exact revenge on Dmitry and his men. His actions arouse Isabel’s suspicions, and she demands the truth from him, including about his involvement with the Quinones murder. He swears his innocence and promises that he would never do anything to hurt her, but she is still wary of his behavior. Later, when Alex is busy avenging his brother, tragedy strikes Isabel, and he is wracked with guilt that he was not there for his wife when she needed him.
Rebecca soon becomes overwhelmed by Jaime’s overbearing family and their elaborate plans for her wedding, which she would prefer to be a simple affair, and finally asks him to elope with her, and he agrees. The two of them sneak off to Georgia and marry that night. Ellis Samuels, meanwhile, enlists the help of a spy to monitor the Duque family’s activities, and it is revealed that she already has an ally in the family: Frank, with whom she is having a relationship.
