MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING'S 7TH ANNUAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, THE: QUANTUM LEAP {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's 7th Annual Television Festival in Los Angeles. (The Museum was known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting.) Presented with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Quantum Leap," a fantasy/science fiction series about Dr. Sam Beckett, a scientist who "leaps" into other people's lives against his will as the result of a flawed time-travel experiment. Ronald Haver of the Los Angeles County Museum Film Department welcomes the audience to the seminar, and Museum of Broadcasting President Robert M. Batscha introduces the following members of the "Quantum Leap" creative team: creator/executive producer Don Bellisario, supervising producer/writer Deborah Pratt, and cast members Dean Stockwell (Dean Stockwell) and Scott Bakula (Dr. Sam Beckett). The producers then introduce the screening of a new episode of the series, "What Price Gloria?", which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:19454.)
After the screening, the panel is welcomed back to the stage, and Bellisario launches into a monologue on the logic of the science on the program. An audience member asks whether the creators will ever write an episode in which Bakula's character fails in his mission, and Bellisario and Pratt explain that they are interested in continuing to explore the way in which each episode ends with an interesting "moral." Pratt and Bakula then tell anecdotes about an episode of the series in which Bakula performed in drag. Another audience member asks whether the writing will continue to include historical references, and Bellisario mentions an episode in which Bakula performed the Heimlich maneuver on Dr. Henry Heimlich. The seminar ends with a discussion of Dean Stockwell's unique persona and with some reflections from Bakula about an episode in which his character leapt into the body of a mentally retarded man.
