DYKE TV {WINTER COMPILATION, 1994} (TV)

Summary

This compilation features highlights from this public access series, which examines lesbian news, arts, sports, health and political issues. The program begins with the "News" segment, hosted by Jocelyn Taylor, about the following topics: lesbian adoption, featuring interviews with Paula Ettelbrick of the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Beatrice Dohrn of Lambda Legal Defense; a lesbian health roundtable in Washington, D.C., featuring interviews with Diane Jordan of Hetrick Martin Institute and Amber Hollibaugh, director of the Lesbian AIDS Project of Gay Men's Health Crisis; and, in Cobb County, Georgia, protests by gays and lesbians against the selection of Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games due to the county's strident anti-gay ordinance, with footage of speakers John Weaver of "Olympics Out of Cobb County" and the Rev. Paul Turner. The "Eyewitness" segment profiles Brenda and Wanda Henson, the founders of "Camp Sister Spirit," a 120-acre farm they own in Ovett, Mississippi, which they are developing as a feminist education center despite constant harassment from the fundamentalist community; included are interviews with camp residents Sherry Michael and Kathy Wilson. In "Work Place," Bettie Naylor discusses her life and her work as a lobbyist in the Texas legislature. "The Arts," hosted by Pamela Sneed, features the Austin, Texas-based lesbian band called "Girls in the Nose," and includes interviews with band members and performance clips. Also featured is a look at the life and work of Barbara Hammer, a pioneer of lesbian filmmaking. Additionally, "Lesbian Health" focuses on the importance of regular self-exams and mammograms in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer; "Sports" segments concern women's rugby and a gay rodeo fundraiser in San Francisco; "Fab Girls Fix It" puts a comic spin on practical bike repair information; "Ann Northrop Mouths Off" concerns the possibility of gaining equal rights for gays by persuading lesbians and gays to fire straight employees, who will in turn go to court to ask for protection on the basis of their sexual orientation; "Inner City Goddesses" features Lexa Roseann discussing the worship of the "Crystal Vulva"; and finally, "I Was a Lesbian Child" features a look at the lives of two women, Lily Gurk Marnell and Paula Grant, whose narration is accompanied by photos of their childhoods.
