CHECKMATE: NICE GUYS FINISH LAST (TV)
Summary
One in this series featuring the investigators of the upscale Checkmate, Inc., Detective Agency. In this episode, Checkmate is employed by the successful Nick Culley, who believes that police Lieutenant Dave Harker has threatened his life. The show begins before the agency is engaged as Harker learns that he has not received an expected promotion to captain. Harker visits Culley, his longtime rival, and accuses him of blocking the promotion. Culley then asks Don Corey and Dr. Hyatt, detectives from Checkmate, to take his case against Harker, as he feels his life is threatened by the rash police detective. When Harker quickly spots the private detectives following him, he confronts Corey and Hyatt, explaining that Culley has a thick file and vowing to pin something on his enemy someday. Still angry, Harker frames Culley for murder. During the trial, Harker starts to fall for Hope Reardon, a young socialite and girlfriend of Culley. Corey and Hyatt send their associate Chris Devlin to investigate Harker undercover. In the meantime, Checkmate detective Jed Sills learns that Harker has had a longtime grudge against Culley, who stole Harker's high-school sweetheart. Things get even more complex when a witness to Harker's frame of Culley tries to blackmail the lieutenant. The plot comes to a dramatic conclusion when Devlin overhears Harker confronting the witness in an abandoned warehouse. Includes commercials.
