MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 1996: A SALUTE TO GEORGE SCHLATTER {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television, and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors the work of television producer, director, and writer George Schlatter. The Museum's television curator, Ron Simon, comments on Schlatter's innovative work and invites him to the stage. Schlatter discusses the importance of The Museum of Television & Radio, the role of television in society, the people who made his work possible, and his feelings about the kind of language and violence he sees on television.
He then introduces a highlight tape which includes clips from the following programs and specials: "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" (1960-1962); "The Judy Garland Show" (1963); "The Steve Lawrence Show" (1965); "The Wonderful World of Burlesque" (1965); "The Colgate Comedy Hour" (1967); "The Meredith Willson Texaco Special" (1964); "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In"; "TCB On Broadway" (1968); "Like Hep" (1969); "Soul" (1968); "Burlesque Is Alive and Living in Beautiful Downtown Burbank" (1970); "One More Time" (1967); "Cher Special" (1975); "Cher," the series (1975-1976); "The New Laugh-In" (1976-1977); "The New Bill Cosby Show" (1972-1973); "Real People"; "Speak Up America" (1980-1981); "One More Time" (1974); "The Goldie Hawn Special" (1978); "John Denver & Friends" (1976); "Doris Day Today" (1974); "Shirley MacLaine Special" (1977); "George Schlatter's Comedy Club Special" (1987-1988); "Goldie & Liza Together" (1980); "The Ultimate Event" (1989); "Salute to Lady Liberty" (1984); "Sammy Davis, Jr., 60th Anniversary Celebration" (1989); "The American Comedy Awards" (1987-1996); "A Party for Richard Pryor" (1991); "Sinatra's 75th Birthday" (1990); "Las Vegas: An All-Star 75th Anniversary (1987)" ; "Muhammad Ali's 50th Birthday Celebration" (1992); "Welcome Home America" (1991); and "Sinatra: 80 Years My Way" (1995). Then, Simon welcomes the following performers, producers, and writers to the stage: "Laugh-In" performers Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, Jo Anne Worley, Alan Sues, and Gary Owens; director and producer Don Mischer; "Real People" cast members Sarah Purcell, Fred Willard, Bill Rafferty, and Byron Allen; writer Pat McCormick; and performer Tim Conway. The panelists recount humorous anecdotes about their work with George Schlatter, including their first meetings with him, his innovative ideas, scenes from "Laugh-In," stories explored on "Real People," and humorous tales of behind-the-scenes chaos and a mutiny.
Questions from audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: an unaired burlesque show starring Goldie Hawn; the fact that a writer on "Laugh-In" would write on the walls and doors of the set; lines and bits that were censored on "Laugh-In" and the "dirty" dancing on the series; a scene involving Conway, Bill Cosby, and chickens; the feeling of abandonment on "Laugh-In"; the distractions that were purposely used on Hawn; the trap door that proved handy on "Laugh-In"; and the prospect of doing another variety show like "Laugh-In." Also, toward the end of the evening, Worley tells a chicken joke.
