FIRING LINE: ALLARD LOWENSTEIN: A RETROSPECTIVE (TV)

Summary

One in this talk/interview series hosted by William F. Buckley, Jr. This program, a retrospective of civil rights leader Allard Lowenstein's appearances on "Firing Line," begins with Senator Edward M. Kennedy's (D-Mass.) eulogy at Lowenstein's funeral, and ends with Buckley's comments at the same gathering. Excerpts are shown from Lowenstein's various guest spots on Buckley's show. One clip shows Lowenstein defending his reluctance to back the current Democratic party candidate for president (1968), while another clip shows Lowenstein lobbying for the defeat of Richard M. Nixon, defining his own loyalties, and lobbying for finance reform (1971). At one point he is shown theorizing about the plot behind the murder of Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY) (1975), and at another point he is shown disputing the aid given to church-related schools (1976). In addition, an excerpt is included in which he talks with British reporters Roger and June Evans about the state of civil rights in developing African nations (1977). Other clips feature Lowenstein quizzing Buckley about his opposition to the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, questioning the practice of capital punishment, and looking at the usefulness of the United Nations as an agent of what he views as idealistic diplomatic behavior. In Lowenstein's final appearance on "Firing Line," in January of 1980, he raises consciousness over political campaigns focusing on public relations as opposed to vital campaign issues.

(Network affiliation varies; this program was also syndicated from 1966 to 1971 and from 1975 to 1977.)
