Summary
One in this dramatic series chronicling the love affairs
of two American girls living in Beijing who become
involved with the inhabitants of a traditional Chinese
courtyard. In this episode, Tianming searches for a new
job after someone saw him at a hotel with a foreign
woman, forcing him to leave the travel agency. Louise's
parents come to the courtyard for dinner, and Louise's
father, Jack, offers Tianliang a job. After talking it
over with his father, Mr. Li, and Tianming, Tianliang
decides not to take the job because of his new
promotion. Jack doesn't understand that Chinese are
loyal to their employers and leaving a company is not
done as frequently in China as in America. After
dinner, everyone goes to the discotheque for some
dancing, including the Lis who show everyone a Chinese
dance. Tianming and Jessie meet up and go to a hotel
room where they make love. The next day at work,
Tianming's boss tells him that he was spotted at a hotel
going into a room with a foreign woman and that such
conduct is not appropriate. Tianming decides to leave
the travel agency, hoping to get a job with Louise's
father. Tianming, wanting to retain his independence
and be obligated to no one, tells Jessie not to talk to
Louise (who would then talk to her father). However,
after Tianming leaves, Jessie calls Louise. Tianming
meets with Jack about the possibility for a job, but
Tianming finds that he disagrees with Jack's business
strategies because Jack is implementing them from an
American standpoint and not modifying them for the
Chinese model; Tianming decides to decline the job
offer. That evening, Miss Ji's dog continues to bark
until Mr. Lu and others break into her home, find her
passed out, and rush her to the hospital. When Tianming
returns home that night, he gets into a heated argument
with his wife and his father over leaving the travel
agency and how it will affect not only him, but the Lis
and his family. As the episode ends, Tianming tells
everyone that he accepted a job with a Japanese car
company's Beijing office, independently of Louise's dad,
and that there is a car show coming up soon.
