FORD-CARTER DEBATE #1 (TV)
Summary
The first of three live and pooled presidential debates between the Republican nominee, incumbent President Gerald Ford, and the Democratic challenger, the former governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter. Topics of this debate from Philadelphia are domestic issues and economic policy. Responding to the panelists, Carter comments on unemployment and criticizes the present tax structure. Ford defends his pardon of former President Richard Nixon and turns down pardons for draft resisters. The candidates disagree over domestic spending, Carter decries the lack of a coherent energy policy in the U.S., and Ford defends his vetoes of several jobs bills. Elizabeth Drew questions the feasibility of Carter's plans for restructuring the tax system. Ford says the Democratic Congress and not the Republican president is responsible for the lack of faith in Washington. The candidates discuss the Federal Reserve Board and intelligence agencies.
