Summary

One in this series of current events documentary programs, hosted by Edward R. Murrow. Highlights of this program include the following: British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrives in Washington aboard the presidential plane "The Independence" and is greeted by President Harry S. Truman; at his Fairmont, West Virginia office, Sen. Matthew Neely (D-W.Va.) is seen answering constituents' letters and meeting with, among others, a leader of a local mine union and Thelma Shaw, a housewife; Murrow reports on the development of Krilium at Lab 19, Monsanto Chemical, in St. Louis, and Dr. Carroll Hochwalt, Vice President for Chemical Research, describes how Krilium conditions the soil and prevents erosion; "See it Now" visits Gen. Eisenhower at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe), near the forest of Marly, France, and looks at a typical day in his command, including visits from Sen. Richard Russell (D-Ga.), Gen. Jerry Persons, George F. Kennan, Princess Margaret, and Winston Churchill; Eisenhower discusses whether our European allies are doing enough; Chief of Staff Alfred M. Gruenther describes SHAPE as a union of twelve countries for their mutual defense; British Major Gen. Francis Festing discusses modern warfare; Field Marshal Montgomery describes a good regiment; Eisenhower inspects the troops; David Schoenbrun interviews French premier RenŽ Pleven on Eisenhower; the mayor of Orgeval, France discusses Eisenhower and Western defense; others offering comments include the French "man on the street" and a member of the Folies Bergere; Pleven speaks on the anti-rearmament talk; writer Eva Curie discusses whether France will fight; and the program concludes with Eisenhower quoting "Vigilance is the price of liberty." Includes commercials.
