Summary

The fifty-fourth annual Academy Awards presentation, broadcast live from Hollywood, and hosted by Johnny Carson. Performers in the first hour of this program include Muppet characters Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, and singer Sheena Easton; presenters include Timothy Hutton, Karen Allen, Howard E. Rollins, Jr., Vincent Price, Kim Hunter, and Roger Moore. Award winners in the first hour include Maureen Stapleton for Best Supporting Actress ("Reds"); Norman Reynolds and Leslie Dilley for Best Art Direction ("Raiders of the Lost Ark"); Michael Ford for Best Set Direction ("Raiders of the Lost Ark"); Rick Baker for Best Achievement in Makeup ("An American Werewolf in London"); and Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

Also featured is an appearance by Fay Kanin, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and clips of past Academy Awards ceremonies with Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, Ryan O'Neal, Bette Davis, Chevy Chase, Jerry Lewis, Clint Eastwood, Harry Belafonte, Timothy Bottoms, Helen Hayes, Danny Thomas, Walter Matthau, Charlton Heston, Fred Astaire, and Celeste Holm. Award winners include "Mephisto" for Best Foreign Language Film; Burt Bacharach, Carol Bayer Sager, Christopher Cross, and Peter Allen for Best Original Song ("Arthur's Theme"); Michael Kahn for Best Film Editing ("Raiders of the Lost Ark"); Danny Kaye, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; Sir John Gielgud (not present) for Best Supporting Actor ("Arthur"); Warren Beatty for Best Director ("Reds"); and Colin Welland for Best Original Screenplay ("Chariots of Fire"). Also included is a clip of a past Academy Awards ceremony with Marlon Brando, and footage from the following films nominated for Best Picture: "Chariots of Fire," "On Golden Pond," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Reds," and "Atlantic City."
