
60 MINUTES {WHO GOT GUNNAR; RAMPAL!; LORD LEW OF SHOW BIZ) (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. This edition includes "Who Got Gunnar," "Rampal!," and "Lord Lew of Show Biz." In the first segment, Dan Rather interviews Gunnar Fredrickson, an employee at the department of Health, Education, and Welfare who spoke out against waste in government and was promptly moved to a non-sensitive job by his superiors. Highlights of this segment include: a former colleague of Fredrickson's discusses the bureaucracy of the government and explains why workers are afraid to point out problems in the system; Fredrickson reveals what happens when a worker raises questions about a government program; and Rather questions Fredrickson's superiors about the delays and cover-ups that occurred when Fredrickson pointed out problems with the pre-paid medical plans. In the second segment, Morley Safer interviews classical flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal. Rampal is shown rehearsing a Mozart flute concerto with the Minnesota Orchestra, playing music with his family in Corsica, and conducting the Minnesota Orchestra. Rampal talks about the purpose of his music, his need for an audience and applause, and his admiration for Isaac Stern.
Stern gives his opinion of Rampal's work and personality. In the third segment, Mike Wallace interviews Lord Lew Grade, a movie producer and the chief executive of ATV. Grade comments on the following topics, among others: the consensus opinion that he spends too much money on his productions; his business deals; how he organized a recent charity gala; his standards of quality; and his meeting with the Pope. In addition, Lord Grade is shown at work in London and Hollywood, organizing a charity gala attended by the Queen of England, and working at home; Julie Andrews and Shirley MacLaine are shown rehearsing for the charity gala;Telly Savalas and Shirley MacLaine briefly discuss their opinions of Lord Grade; and Mike Wallace reviews some of Lord Grade's accomplishments. At the end of the program Andy Rooney comments on big business takeovers and Dan Rather reads letters from viewers in response to segments on a Los Angeles Poverty Agency and mandatory retirement for older workers.
