60 MINUTES {HERE'S. . .JOHNNY; OIL IN THE BANK; JUDGMENT DAY} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. This installment presents the following segments: "Here's. . . Johnny"; "Oil in the Bank"; and "Judgment Day." Mike Wallace begins the program with an interview with Johnny Carson, who discusses the following topics: the stereotypical view of Carson; Carson's need for control; the importance of not taking a side on a controversial issue on "The Tonight Show"; Carson's competitive side; why Carson plays the drums; Carson's alcohol problem; why Carson is reluctant to discuss personal issues; and the failure of "The Johnny Carson Show" produced in the 1950s. In addition, Wallace visits the Carson estate, talks with Ed McMahon about his role on "The Tonight Show"; watches Carson play the drums; and talks to Carson's wife, Joanna, about Carson's drinking problem. Also, footage from an awards ceremony at Harvard University, where Carson was honored, is shown. In the second segment, Dan Rather investigates the United States government's attempt at storing oil. Through interviews with various public officials, including Louisiana Governor Edwin W. Edwards, and workers hired to do manual labor on the project, Rather learns of the disorganized manner in which the project has been run. He visits a salt mine where oil is supposed to be stored, but is not, due to the high cost of the commodity so desperately needed by consumers. He learns of the bureaucratic reasons why the government will never reach its goal to have "oil in the bank." In the third segment, Harry Reasoner talks with Dr. William Martin, a graduate of Divinity school, who critiques church services. During this segment, Martin is shown visiting various churches in Texas and discusses the following topics: the success of evangelical churches; Martin's religious beliefs and critical views; and the criticisms that Martin has gotten from the public. In addition, various preachers, who have been reviewed by Martin, give their response to his comments. At the end of the program, viewer mail is read against a skyline backdrop. The letters comment on the following topics, which were covered by "60 Minutes" on a previous show: a doctor who was charged with murder for not attempting to save an aborted fetus; Jesse Jackson's comments on banks owned by Jews; and the people of Palm Springs, California. Includes commercials.
