Actress, playwright, educator, and social commentator, Anna Deavere Smith came to prominence with a pair of groundbreaking pieces of theater, Fires in the Mirror and Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, both of which examined controversial and incendiary events through a combination of journalistic insight and performance art. As an actress she is best known for playing National Security Advisor Nancy McNally on The West Wing and hospital administrator Gloria Akalitus on the current Showtime hit Nurse Jackie. She is the 2013 recipient of The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize and a 1996 recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship. Smith will discuss her acting and writing career, as well as the social issues and artistic goals that are at the center of her role as founder of Anna Deavere Smith Works Inc.
