The Paley Center for Media is pleased once again to screen the Feature Documentaries nominated for the Academy Awards. These weekend screenings give Paley Center visitors a unique chance to see some of the documentary features before the 86th Oscars telecast on Sunday evening, March 2. Filmmakers Zachary Heinzerling and Lydia Dean Pilcher
Cutie and the Boxer explores the forty-year relationship of leading New York City artist Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko. As Ushio tries to find commercial success for his alternative style, Noriko pursues her own semi-autobiographical art project, searching for her own artistic voice.

Backup singing has been a low-profile art form—until now. 20 Feet from Stardom puts the spotlight on these unsung heroes of music and provides a personal look into the frustrations, challenges, and triumphs in their decades-long careers.

The Act of Killing
Filmmakers Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sørensen
When the Indonesian government was overthrown by its military in 1965, several small-time black market dealers were promoted to death squad leaders. In this documentary, the filmmakers challenge these former executioners to recreate their mass killings on camera in the style of their favorite film genres.

Filmmakers Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer
The Square tells the story of the ongoing Egyptian Revolution of 2011 through the eyes of several different activists, giving an up-close view of the revolution and the voices behind it.
