Social Studies Film and Media Seminar Series

The Paley Center offers professional training workshops for educators as part of its role as a community resource and also to help develop an informed audience. Workshops focus on how to use television and radio to enrich existing classroom curricula and stress the importance of focused viewing, listening, and discussion when using media as a teaching tool.
In partnership with the NYC DOE Department of Social Studies, The Paley Center for Media’s education department is happy to offer the Social Studies Film and Media Seminar Series during the 2022–2023 school year. This series provides teachers with strategies to effectively use fictional films, documentaries, and graphic novels in conjunction with American and Global history curriculum.
Participating teachers will meet for a series evening sessions from November to June to examine themes, content and historical accuracies and inaccuracies in some of Hollywood's cinematic interpretations of the past. Participants will receive and view film selections prior to each session. Facilitators will lead historical and pedagogical sessions on strategies for utilizing each film in the classroom.
