WAY OUT {'WAY OUT}: WILLIAM AND MARY {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The premiere of this fantasy/science fiction anthology series hosted by Roald Dahl. Dahl begins by admonishing children, young lovers, and "people with stomach disorders" not to watch the program. In the ensuing drama, a doctor informs meek Mary Pearl that her husband William's condition is inoperable. William Pearl, a sour, fatalistic philosophy professor, orders his wife to live a life of abstemious frugality after his death. Dr. Martin Landy arrives with an intriguing proposition: he will preserve Pearl's brain and keep it alive on a special machine, allowing the disembodied brain to interact with the world via one lone eyeball submerged in a basin of liquid. Pearl agrees, relishing the opportunity to annoy his wife in perpetuity. After the operation, Mrs. Pearl, who has defied all her husband's dictates and has taken to smoking and dancing to cha-cha records, returns to the hospital to visit the eyeball. She demands to be allowed to take her "husband" back home with her, hoping to show him the kind of care and attention he deserves. Includes a commercial and a promo.
