New Girl

Few series have evolved so quickly from promising newcomer to assured pro... and, looking back on its hilarious, affecting, nearly flawless second season, New Girl looks to be on pace to be named an instant classic. Anchored by Zooey Deschanel’s winsome Jess, New Girl’s crack ensemble deftly balances rapid-fire verbal wit, broad slapstick, and richly layered character work, as creator Elizabeth Meriwether and her writing staff have perfected a fizzy brand of silly/sophisticated relationship comedy that packs a surprising emotional wallop. If “charming” didn’t seem to be damning New Girl with faint praise, we’d call it the most charming show on the air. Instead, we’ll just say it’s brilliant.
