The Mindy Project—from The Office veteran Mindy Kaling formerly known as Kelly Kappor—is one of the most instantly engaging new series in recent memory. Few shows are launched with such a strong and distinctive creative voice so firmly in place. Kaling’s Dr. Mindy Lahiri is an original, a woman too keenly intelligent and accomplished to accept the promises of romantic comedies at face value, but too determinedly “girly” not to really, really want to. A mercurial font of skewed feminist conviction and blithe self-absorption, Dr. Lahiri feels like the freshest and most of-the-moment comic female character gracing the small screen, and the supporting ensemble is shaping up as an equally compelling collection of deeply flawed, stealthily endearing foils.
