Summary
This is a portion of one in this series of nightly news programs providing in-depth coverage of issues affecting the New York metropolitan area. This black-and-white film examines actual events that occur in the emergency room at Kings County Hospital. It includes footage of a medical resident and various aides caring for a woman who was hit by car; medical staff treating a pregnant teenager who overdosed on Bayer aspirin; doctors caring for a man who overdosed on methadone and alcohol; a psychiatric resident talking with a woman who recently had a religious experience and has lost control of her senses; and medical staff members treating a man who was shot in the head. In addition, the following people comment on working in the emergency room: Dr. Jonathan Alexander, a medical resident; Dr. Kildare Clarke, a psychiatric resident; and police officers. They comment on the following topics, among others: the training of the personnel caring for the patients; the information given to a patient about his or her condition; the reasons why doctors do not treat members of their own family; the necessity of becoming immune to the suffering that occurs in emergency room; the way in which they must think about the patients; the importance of setting their emotions aside; the types of cases that come into the hospital; the problems one faces when dealing with drug addicts; and the need to protect one's own sanity.
