20/20 {BARBRA STREISAND SEGMENT ONLY} (TV)

Summary

An excerpt from this series of news magazine programs. This segment includes an interview by Barbara Walters with singer and actress Barbra Streisand.

Walters discusses some of Streisand's background and current activities. She is performing a concert at Las Vegas for New Year's Eve, the first public concert she has given in 27 years. Walters interviews her in New York City, where she is auctioning away her valuable antique furniture at Christie's Auction House. Over the years Streisand has lent her talents to acting, singing, and more recently directing. She has been somewhat reclusive and unwilling to make public appearances, except for charity concerts and political events. She also is highly outspoken on discrimination issues, such as her speaking out against a law in Colorado discriminating against homosexuals. She founded the Streisand Foundation in 1986, through which she has given away seven million dollars to various charity organizations. Walters also examines Streisand's childhood; her father passed away when she was a baby and her mother remarried a man who constantly ignored her.

During the interview, Streisand discusses the following: her desire to "simplify" her life by giving away many of her possessions; how she hopes to be "coming out of her cocoon" by eschewing her former reclusiveness; the popular view of her as an obsessive perfectionist and her desire to "let go and let God"; her reasons for performing her concert in Las Vegas; how the press reacted to her appearance at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton; her feelings on visiting a number of historic places and objects in Washington, D.C.; her changing criteria as to what films she will involve herself with; her opinion of what she is like both externally and internally; her desire to be more "compassionate" with others; the death of her father and how this impacted her and her work; her lack of a relationship with her stepfather; her ambitions and plans for the future; and how she would like to be remembered.
