Good morning, USA! The animated Smiths of 43 Cherry Lane, Langley Falls, Virginia, led by patriarch Stan Smith, a rabid but clueless CIA agent, are just your typical American brood: devoted wife, dorky son, political-activist daughter, plus a sardonic alien and an anthropomorphic goldfish with the brain of a German Olympian—understanding of course that they inhabit the twisted terrain of Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, and two former writers from that show, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. Blending satire with good old-fashioned (and not) family comedy, American Dad! has been described by MacFarlane as “sort of a Family Guy meets All in the Family kind of show.” Whatever it is, it’s working; American Dad! is a legit cult hit about to embark on its seventh season on Fox.
