FX’s reputation for quality one-hour dramas took another leap forward last year with The Bridge, a thinking-person’s crime thriller that explores the tensions on the U.S.-Mexico border and the conflicts between two opposing cultures. “What’s most compelling about The Bridge,” wrote Time critic James Poniewozik, “is that it emphasizes not the psychology or forensics of the case but its context.” Based on the Scandinavian series Bron, The Bridge was adapted by Meredith Stiehm (Homeland, Cold Case) and Elwood Reid (Cold Case, Hawaii Five-O), and boasts a gifted cast headed by Demián Bichir and Diane Kruger as a mismatched pair of police detectives, one from each side of the border. The talented ensemble is rounded out by Ted Levine (Monk), Matthew Lillard (The Descendants, Scooby-Doo), and Emily Rios (Breaking Bad, Private Practice). The series’s freshman year was bookended by a pair of awards: a Critics Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series and a George Foster Peabody Award for television excellence.
